He started his life in England as a child fleeing Kenya as the fears of persecution, following the horrors of the Idi Amin regime in Uganda, started to infiltrate their family life and safety. After arriving in the UK, He then experienced bullying and harassment. This started to shape the person that he would become, a person dedicated to supporting people who are targeted because of who they are.

After learning to speak English and surviving school Shashi joined West Yorkshire Police. His 30-year career covered many aspects of policing but in later years he specialised in supporting victims of Hate Crime. As a Safeguarding Officer he worked with many agencies to ensure people got the support they needed. He developed and delivered training to his colleagues and to partner agencies on a range of Hate Crime issues.

Shashi has always been interested in disability issues and has extensive experience of supporting people targeted because of their disability. Through his professional and personal life, he has worked to tackle the barriers and discrimination disabled people experience that can prevent them from realising their aspirations and potential.

For a decade Shashi was Chair of West Yorkshire Black Police Association.
